Stolen Vehicle Engineering Consultants
I was asked to inspect a "stolen recovered" 2000 (X) model Peugeot 206 that was puzzling the insurance assessor. The vehicle itself was quite tidy and in generally excellent condition except for kerbed and scratched alloy wheels and illegal bald tyres, indicating that the vehicle had been driven to within an inch of its' life and treated with disregard.
The PH claimed that the vehicle had been stolen and previous to that the wheels were unmarked and the tyres in excellent shape with plenty of tread left.
The vehicle had been wearing a cherished registration plate, however upon inspection at the recovery yard, it was wearing its original 2000 registration plate, having been placed back on the vehicle by the PH. This would tend to indicate that the PH was expecting the vehicle to be an insurance write off and therefore would transfer his cherished plate to another vehicle. No signs of a theft, no missing or outstanding keys and by the PH's own admission no chance of anybody obtaining his keys for long enough to have a copy or clone made, the only conclusion that can be drawn is attempted fraud.
2000 Peugeot 206
Ignition lock and barrel intact, and steering lock
functions to specification.
Diagnostic tester shows that this 206 only had 2 keys programmed both with remote buttons. Ruling out cloned keys by the PH's sworn statement and no theft damage to the vehicle one could only conclude that the vehicle had been reported stolen such that the insurers would accept the state of the wheels and tyres as theft related damage!

"Woooooow wo woooooaaaah, my Passat's on fire..."
One "flaming" fibber of a PH submitted a claim for the loss of his 2001 Passat. He claims it was stolen, only to be found abandoned with minor interior fire damage. There were no signs of a break in.. because the PH drove the car to the burn locus himself, set fire to the interior, shut and locked the doors with his key and then "hot footed" it away. The fire quickly went out due to a lack of oxygen due to the doors and windows being shut. He should have spotted the CCTV camera... it spotted him!!
