Stolen Vehicle Engineering Consultants
A 2004 Sprinter van was reported stolen by its owner to his insurance company. I was instructed to examine the keys for the vehicle and report back my findings. The PH handed two keys in for the vehicle - a genuine Mercedes Benz transponder key and a SILCA copy key. I confirmed the key number with Mercedes Benz UK, and it transpired that this matched the cut-profile of the SILCA copy key. The genuine Mercedes key handed in was incorrect for this vehicle.
Upon interrogating the transponders on my key reader, it was evident that the SILCA copy key had a "blank" Silca type 20-T5 transponder which would not allow the van to start.
The PH claims that no other keys exist for the vehicle and that the SILCA key had been used.
The van would have been supplied with two OE Mercedes transponder keys when new - both of these are missing and not accounted for.
The genuine keys (missing) would have been equipped with Temic (Silca type 12) transponders - the PH has not offered an explanation as to where these keys have gone.
Possibly, the PH may at some stage have suffered an immobiliser fault and had a replacement system from a scrapped vehicle installed (and changed the ignition lock to suit the new immobiliser key profile) however this would negate his claim that the SILCA key was a working key.

"Woooooow wo woooooaaaah, my Passat's on fire..."
One "flaming" fibber of a PH submitted a claim for the loss of his 2001 Passat. He claims it was stolen, only to be found abandoned with minor interior fire damage. There were no signs of a break in.. because the PH drove the car to the burn locus himself, set fire to the interior, shut and locked the doors with his key and then "hot footed" it away. The fire quickly went out due to a lack of oxygen due to the doors and windows being shut. He should have spotted the CCTV camera... it spotted him!!
