Stolen Vehicle Engineering Consultants
This 1999 Renault Megane Scenic has covered 150,000 tough miles and has been subject to quite some abuse. It's owner reported it stolen although quite why somebody would go to the trouble of stealing such a poor condition, high mileage vehicle is beyond us given that the same tools and equipment needed could be used on a more modern better condition vehicle.
The PH reports only ever having one key for the vehicle, claiming that the previous keeper must have retained the spare key only to use it to steal the vehicle from her. However, there has been some attempt to make the vehicle appear stolen - the drivers quarter window was smashed and the ignition barrel has been defaced with a screwdriver, however the lock remains intact and the steering column locked. There are no signs of door lock damage and the immobiliser on the vehicle is the original, and when interrogated using diagnostics, only knows 2 keys - the one handed in and a missing spare.
The lack of any real theft damage plus the fact that the drivers window has been electrically powered down indicates that a key at least mechanically matching the vehicle locks was used to unlock the doors and power up the ignition fed circuits such as windows etc.
The lack of any signs of bumping or towing away lead the investigating engineer to conclude that a key known to the immobiliser was used to start and drive the vehicle to its "dump locus" this implicating the PH in some manner. The client has good grounds to be able to reject the PH's claim.

The diagnostic test computer reveals that the immobiliser control unit is functioning properly, is original to the car and only knows 2 transponder keys.
"Woooooow wo woooooaaaah, my Passat's on fire..."
One "flaming" fibber of a PH submitted a claim for the loss of his 2001 Passat. He claims it was stolen, only to be found abandoned with minor interior fire damage. There were no signs of a break in.. because the PH drove the car to the burn locus himself, set fire to the interior, shut and locked the doors with his key and then "hot footed" it away. The fire quickly went out due to a lack of oxygen due to the doors and windows being shut. He should have spotted the CCTV camera... it spotted him!!
