Stolen Vehicle Engineering Consultants
A 2001 Ford Transit owner reported his pride and joy stolen. It was recovered with no signs of theft related damage hence my client instructed me to travel to Suffolk and investigate. The one key handed in by the PH was inspected and found to date to 2003 although it was an original factory key. This had already roused our suspicions. I checked with Ford Motor Company, and this van was supplied new with 2 keys and one remote fob. The key handed in by the PH was not the correct mechanical profile to operate the locks or ignition and it was not compatible with the immobiliser hence would not start the engine. As can be seen from the pictures, the van is in extremely poor, unroadworthy condition and certainly of no attraction to a thief. The PH claimed that the key he handed in was the key he used to open and drive the van on a daily basis. Clearly he was not telling the truth, and this van had not been stolen. It still only knew it's original two keys (neither of which the PH was able to produce) and hence one can only conclude that the PH was intending to take his insurance company for a ride. His claim will be repudiated, he will end up on the MIAFTR database as a "risk" to insurers and may find it very hard to gain subsequent insurance cover on a motor vehicle.
The diagnostic test computer reveals that the immobiliser control unit is functioning properly and that it knows two transponder keys, neither of which were produced by the PH! The key haned in by the PH is for a 2003 vehicle - possibly obtained from Ebay or similar.

"Woooooow wo woooooaaaah, my Passat's on fire..."
One "flaming" fibber of a PH submitted a claim for the loss of his 2001 Passat. He claims it was stolen, only to be found abandoned with minor interior fire damage. There were no signs of a break in.. because the PH drove the car to the burn locus himself, set fire to the interior, shut and locked the doors with his key and then "hot footed" it away. The fire quickly went out due to a lack of oxygen due to the doors and windows being shut. He should have spotted the CCTV camera... it spotted him!!
